In January of this year Vice Editor Andy Capper and filmmaker Leo Leigh (son of director Mike Leigh) spent a couple of weeks in the North West seaside town of Blackpool, meeting the people who live there all year round, and who give the town its unique character.
Once Britains number one holiday destination, Blackpool is struggling to keep up the times. The worlds economic decline is very much in evidence as the film follows characters from the backstreet slums to the sex shops to the hotel talent contests to the high rise buildings where unemployment is as high as 90 per cent.
Taking in pigeon fancying contests, blue comedians, tattooists and Polish immigrants, Blackpool: The Las Vegas Of The North is an intimate snapshot of a part of Britain thats got heaps of problems but still retains a certain magic.
